Moonlit Sanctuary was born in the childhood dream of founder and director Michael Johnson. Michael imagines a place where people can experience rare and unusual animals roaming in the Australian bush. The Moonlight Temple is that place. Each animal was carefully selected by Michael to complete his lifelong plan to help prevent the rapid extinction of Australian animal species. As a child, Moonlit Sanctuary collected animals in his backyard in the suburbs of Melbourne. His school yearbook even quoted his future aspirations "want to help animals." He is an enthusiastic reader, and he was inspired by Gerald Durrell, a well-known British naturalist, natural resource conservationist and animal steward. Darrell's work attracted and captured the hearts and thoughts of animal lovers all over the world, and Michael was not spared. In 1996, Michael came to the Darrell Foundation Conservation College in Jersey, where he has been a frontier for wildlife protection for decades.
