The Collector Inn is located on the site of the former dow museum of historic buildings, a one-acre garden oasis that includes nine historic houses from 1790 to 1910. The Collector Inn’s historic building, which spans a block of downtown st. Mayine, was once an integral part of the city's history, serving as a 16th-century hospital and cemetery, an 18th-century Spanish defense line, and the foundation for the 1863 reading of the emancipation proclamation that freed Florida's slave population. Kenneth Worcester Dow bought the 1790 Prince Murat House, the oldest House on the block, in the 1930s, and by the early 1950s had acquired all nine houses on the site. Dow, an avid collector of art, furniture and other antiques, donated its entire collection to the museum of art and science in 1989.
