Founded in 1987, SID is New Zealand's only shrimp park. SID specializes in aquaculture, that is, the breeding and rearing of aquatic animals in controlled or specific environments. As wild populations taken from the sea are being depleted, many species are now farmed commercially, like shrimp. They want to use the heat of a geothermal power plant to study and develop shrimp's ability to reproduce and grow in captivity. Because they need to control their silicon content, they can't directly pump geothermal water into the pond, so they use a heat exchanger, a geothermal fluid that heats the fresh outer Cator water to 26 degrees and then recycles it back to the pond. There are enough shrimp in reserve to produce five tons of shrimp a year.
