Walter specialized in the production of fruit trees and in 1944 began drawing landscape plans for homeowners as well as producing plant catalogs and undertaking landscaping contracts. In these ways his business grew so that many business partners joined the company in the 1960s and 70s. Charles Wood's original location was sold and in 1974, SHELMERDINE was established in Headingley.
