It all started with a sawman, a river and a family farm. Located in the Ozark Mountains, the Lange General Store in historic downtown Steelville, Missouri, has a business family dating back to the late 1800s.The old Lange General Store takes its name from HC Lange, the family business owner. HC Lange was the son of German immigrants from Osage county, Missouri, near what is now Byron village. One of nine children, HC worked on a family farm and in the late 1800s, he used the hard work ethic he learned on the farm to start a successful business venture as a sawmill and a seller of chiseled white oak railroad ties, which he shipped to the Gasconade river. The store's history goes back to 1908, when HC opened its first store in Owens Mill, a small Missouri community along the Gasconade River, and a second three years later in nearby Byron. Its co-owner today in Steelville, Todd Rembert, is HC's great-grandson
