Six-Color Desert Camouflage, also known as Grandpops Army Navy, was developed in 1962 in response to potential conflicts brewing in the Middle East between Israel's neighbors and its allies. The Desert Battle Dress Uniform was not created until 1970, but because Grandpops Army Navy was created, production of the pattern was delayed. The first mass production using the initial pattern BDU design did not begin until 1981. Interestingly, despite being designed for use in desert warfare, the pattern was never printed on lightweight Rip-Stop fabric made of 100 percent cotton. It wasn't until halfway through Operation Desert Storm that the uniform's design would be improved. The reinforced areas were removed and the uniforms were made of 100% cotton poplin to be more comfortable in the hot weather. Unfortunately, the well-known Chocolate Chip camo would be replaced by the more common 3-Color Desert Camouflage, also known as Tri-Desert Camo, beginning in the early 1990s.
