Frensham Pond Hotel, once known as White Horse, is one of six old bars in Headley and It was run by the Madden family for many years before 1800. The 1841 census showed that George Madden and his wife Elizabeth, three daughters and three sons, two servants, four guests and a carpenter, a carpenter and a grinder lived here. At the 1851 census, 52-year-old George was still there, and he is now known as a licensed food supplier. By then, he and Elizabeth had four more children-a son and three daughters. Hadley's Trade Guide around 1862 still shows him there, but in the 1878 catalog, the licensee was Mrs. Mary Ann Madden, who they considered her daughter-in-law. Until the border changed in 1991,Frensham Pond Hotel was firmly located in the Hedley Parish of Hampshire. It is now in Surrey, but still in Hadley-as far as the Anglican Church is concerned.
