Elmwood- park- zoo was developed in 1924 when a farmer transferred a small menagerie and 16 acres of land to the Borough of Norristown. Presently Elmwood- park zoo is operated and owned by Norristown Zoological society which is a non- profit organisation and its mission is to foster the appreciation for environment and wildlife so that active participation in the conservation program is inspired. Under the careful management of the society, Elmwood Park Zoo has been recognised under the special 230 institutions which are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. There is a collection of more than 100 species in the Elmwoof Park Zoo which are hailed across the globe. The most highlighted collection includes red pandas, jaguars, golden and bald eagles, zebras and giraffes. Most of its collection is managed under species survival plan (SSP). The program is aiming to maintain the increased size of fauna population which is under the greatest threat of extinction. Other significant species in its wildlife stories are American alligators, bald eagle, peregrine falcon and American bison. About two- third of the animals collected by Elmwood park zoo is on the verge of extinction and many of them are maintained for special educational programs.
