Down Wind Sports opened its doors for business in the University Shopping Center on North Third Street in Marquette in May 1976. Dennis and Nancy Henderson started Down Wind as a way to go back to their home state of Utah. At first, Down Wind Sports sold sailing gear, Hobie Cats, and a Frostline pre-cut sewing kit for outdoor gear and clothing. The combination of sailing wind and down sewing kits gives rise to the name Down Wind. They began adding outdoor specialty products to their inventory after several years. Patagonia, a relatively unknown company, was the first line of clothing brought into the store. They are pleased to have been one of the initial Patagonia dealers in the Midwest. Throughout the long term, they have been quick to present windsurfing, snowboarding and ocean kayaking to the Marquette region.
