In 1810, a French Huguenot immigrant named Jean Jaques bought land in New York's idyllic Hudson Valley and started planting grapes. By 1837, Mr. Jacques needed more land, so he bought a field in the quiet village of Washingtonville, New York, and planted another vineyard. By 1839, his first underground wine cellar was excavated and Jacques made his first vintage. Those cellars are the oldest and largest cellars in the United States and are still in use today. The Jacks have worked at Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville for nearly 60 years, and most of the wine was sold to two New York City wine merchants Jesse and Edward Emerson.
